PSJailbreak FAQ & Review

What is PSJailbreak?

For the past four years, the PS3 has been immune to any kind of modification. Gone is the unbreakable PS3 when the PSJailbreak was announced on 19th August 2010. PSjailbreak is essentially a thumb size USB dongle / pendrive. It does not have any wires. Installation does not even require opening up of the console, soldering or any ribbon cable. Anyone who has used a USB pendrive is able to use the PSjailbreak as it only requires plugging the USB PSJailbreak dongle into the USB port on the PS3.

How does PSJailbreak do?

Although the PSjailbreak USB dongle is really tiny, its implication is enormous as it opens a brand new world for the homebrew community. With the ongoing contribution by the homebrew community, the tiny dongle will bring in hundreds of 3rd party applications on your PS3 while enabling you to make backups of your original games on your existing hard drive, external USB hard drive and USB pen drive. Not only that you can enjoy the complete collection of your PS3 games backed up in your hard drive without worrying about scratching the discs but also enjoy the games with loading speed twice as fast! In addition, the life of the PS3 lasers will be extended tremendously. With the incoming Media Players, Browsers, and many more applications from the homebrew community, the PS3 will become a truly all-rounded Play Station. It is time to go beyond the impossible.

What is PSJailbreak compatible with?

The PS Jailbreak USB dongle is compatible with all Playstation 3 phat and slim models, namely 20 GB, 40 GB, 60 GB, 80 GB, 160 GB, 120 GB, 250 GB, and 320 GB as well as PS3 Slim.

Does PSjailbreak require any driver or software application?

Unlike the Wode For Wii which does not come with application for game backup, the PSjailbreak for PS3 is equipped with a piece of a homebrew software, Backup Manager, that you can load up and back up your original titles onto a hard drive. The Backup Manager is the first homebrew application for PS3. Many more will come. The possibility of using external hard drive along side with the limited PS3 internal hard drive means that you can leave the internal hard drive for normal use. With the user-friendly Backup Manager and the economic hard drive with 1 – 2 TG storage capacity, there is almost no limit on how many titles that you can save.

Does PSJailbreak support all PS3 firmware versions?

Although it has been said to be compatible with a few firmware versions, it is designed and optimised for the firmware 3.41. It has been reported that running the PSjailbreak on firmware versions older than 3.41 is quite stable, including machine unable to boot up. Therefore, it is better to upgrade the firmware of the PS3 to 3.41 to ensure the full compatibility of the PSjailbreak.

Can I still use the PSJailbreak once the PS3 firmware has been updated?

In addition, the updatable firmware for the PSJailbreak is another must have feature as it is the only way to go around the future firmware release by Sony. It is also important for fixing other bugs in the future. The PS Jailbreak will disable your console from doing automatic updates after installed, this is to prevent any newer firmwares released for the console that could interfere with the way the product works.

What are the most important features of PSJailbreak?

  • Plug and Play via USB: no wiring, no soldering, no opening up the console

  • Backup manager software: for games backup on both external and internal hard drives

  • Firmware upgradeable

  • Full homebrew compatibility

  • No more disc scratch

  • Minimise the laser head damage

Tip for using the PSJailbreak is that if you are using the PSjailbreak to play games on the external hard drive, you may need to leave any of original games in the console. This minor bug is expected to be fixed in the new firmware of the PSjailbreak.
